Description
With technical brilliance and a spirit of inquiry, Karl Heinz Koller created an exceptional body of work that achieved what was long thought nearly impossible using analog means. In an age accustomed to digital image worlds, what this “image generator,” as he called himself, brings before our eyes is all the more astonishing. With early series such as One Month in My Life (1974), performances by artists including Johann Jascha and Bruno Demattio (1972–75), and a documentary project on European youth centers, Karl Heinz Koller already opened up a remarkably wide field at the outset of his artistic career. From 1975 onward, he turned to color photography and developed his Configurations—hundreds of circular, mandala-like compositions in which he created new photographic realities through the use of a rotating table, multiple exposures, and a deliberate interplay of focus and blur.
Between 1989 and 1995, the independent body of work From the Palace of Immortality – Project Erwin came into being, consisting of 39 notebooks containing texts, photographs, and clippings. Taken as a whole, Koller’s oeuvre emerges as idiosyncratic and avant-garde, gaining recognition through, among other milestones, his participation in the legendary exhibition Extended Photography at the Vienna Secession. His early death prevented wider public awareness; this first publication now restores visibility to his art-historically significant position.
