Theft [2024]
Joint Exhibit, Jewish Museum Vienna and Wien Museum: June 6 until October 27, 2024
Description
The systematic disenfranchisement, persecution, and murder of Vienna's Jewish population under National Socialist rule was accompanied by unprecedented theft. Thousands of Viennese apartments and houses were plundered. The stolen furniture, artworks, and objects were seized, sold, or added to museum collections.
Twenty-five years of provenance research at the Wien Museum was the point of departure for Theft, a joint exhibition at the Jewish Museum Vienna and Wien Museum. In the form of a film installation, the exhibition traces the processes of robbery and incorporation. Featuring twelve particular cases, the accompanying publication records the stories of the victims deprived of their collections.
