Description
Otto Wagner (1841-1918) was one of the great pioneers of modern architecture. In reaction to nineteenth-century historicism he propagated a contemporary style of archi-tecture intended to reflect modern life. Wagner's designs combine technical and con-structional functionalism with high aesthetic standards. As general director of planning for the Vienna Stadtbahn (urban light railway) he designed a Gesamtkunstwerk - a total work of art - that remains an out-standing feature of Vienna's cityscape to this day. With the Austrian Postal Savings Bank and the Church at Steinhof, he created key works of Euro-pean architecture at the turn of the twentieth century. In his residential architecture, Wagner embraced modern styles, ranging from Art Nouveau to a complete rejection of orna-mentation.
This city map is a guide to Otto Wagner's Vienna. It takes you to his most important buildings, from the city center to the banks of the Danube.
