When New York’s Metropolitan Opera opened on September 13, 1966, audiences and journalists were in awe of the 20 chandeliers and almost 200 wall sconces. Visible from afar and reminiscent of distant galaxies, the luminous fixtures soon became the landmark of the opera house but also of the city of New York itself. They were a gift from the Republic of Austria to the United States as a sign of gratitude for the reconstruction aid provided via the Marshall Plan after World War II.
In cooperation with “J. & L. Lobmeyr” and “GoodGoods,” a special edition was created: a hand-cut MET crystal that — with a candle — shines in a different way.
“J. & L. Lobmeyr” was founded in Vienna in 1823 by Joseph Lobmeyr. A love for the material, an emotional relationship with the product, and personal commitment are what have shaped each generation. By focusing on utilizing glass and light in creative and contemporary interpretations, the company can consistently maintain its legacy. Old inspires new, and traditional knowledge enables innovation.
“GoodGoods” brings sustainable design products from sheltered workshops to the market at fair prices. The essence of the initiative lies in connecting people’s skills with disabilities and designers. Such fruitful collaborations result in simple, useful objects that enhance the lives and homes of others. By bringing all this potential together, products that the European labor market would otherwise regard as unfeasible can be created.
